What is Dolomite? Is it used only for tomato plants?
Dolomite is a source of calcium and magnesium and can be used for any plant, although it is critical for healthy tomatoes and other "seeded" vegetables. Dolomite should be used for all "seeded" vegetables since they need a lot of calcium in order to produce healthy fruit. It is also used to raise the pH of the potting mix since peat is very acidic.
How do I know when to fertilize my plants?
You will add fertilizer at the time of planting - one time per growing season.
What kind of fertilizer does the FarmDaddy® Self Watering Garden Container need?
Use 2 cups of granular fertilizer (use 3 cups if the fertilizer is organic). The three numbers making up the fertilizer content should be in the range of 5 to 15 (i.e.12-8-10, 10-10-10, 6-8-10).
Can I use organic fertilizer?
Yes! Many FarmDaddy® Garden Container users prefer growing their plants organically.
Can I use liquid fertilizer or fertilizers that are mixed with water?
Liquid fertilizers defeat the purpose of the FarmDaddy® Self Watering Garden Container as nutrients are not provided on a constant stable basis. An occasional shot of liquid fertilizer, in addition to the fertilizer strip, is okay, but not necessary.
Can I use Osmocote® or other time-release fertilizers for the fertilizer strip?
No. Time-release or "coated" fertilizers should not be used. Potting mix that already contains fertilizer is okay to use, but it does not replace the fertilizer strip. You should still add the fertilizer strip when you set up your FarmDaddy® Garden Container.
Can you give me any special tips on growing tomatoes?
Add 1 cup of Dolomite (Calcium Magnesium Carbonate) and mix into the top 3 inches of potting mix. Tomatoes produce healthy fruit in abundant quantities when grown in slightly acidic soil. Tomatoes prefer rich organic matter with sufficient amounts of calcium and magnesium. Dolomite helps to adjust the soil pH to the correct level. It also facilitates the availability of soil nutrients to plant roots.
